Image Guided Pain Interventions

Image Guided Joint Injections for Diagnosis and Pain Management

Interventional Radiography uses real-time image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat orthopaedic and other types of conditions. Fluoroscopy takes pictures of the bones and joints and guides the procedure for the most precise outcomes.

Image Guided tools have proven to be essential to visualize specific anatomical structure and features of a given condition. Image Guided interventions provide a safe and effective delivery of therapy.

Image guided interventions combined with active rehabilitation is a proven and effective way to manage pain and optimize recovery.

Genicular Nerve Blocks

Genicular Nerve Blocks

A genicular nerve block is an injection in the knee that can provide temporary pain relief. Healthcare providers use them for chronic knee pain and to manage pain after knee surgery. The results can vary from person to person. Most people experience significant pain relief, so they can participate in a active exercise and rehabilitaion program.

Studies have shown that a population of knee pain patients, after genicular nerve radiofrequency ablation, experience improved function and greater than 50% pain relief through 24 months.

Depomedrol steroid with marcaine

Depo-Medrol (Methylprednisolone Acetate):

Depo-Medrol is a corticosteroid medication. Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications that mimic the effects of hormones naturally produced by the adrenal glands. Depo-Medrol is often used to reduce inflammation and relieve pain in conditions such as arthritis, allergic reactions, certain skin disorders, and more. It is administered as an injection directly into the affected area or into a muscle.

Marcaine (Bupivacaine):

Marcaine is a local anesthetic medication. It works by blocking nerve signals in a specific area, numbing the region and providing temporary pain relief. It is often used for local anaesthesia during medical procedures, dental work, and childbirth. Marcaine is also sometimes combined with corticosteroids like Depo-Medrol in certain injections to provide both immediate pain relief from the local anaesthetic and longer-term anti-inflammatory effects from the corticosteroid.

Hyaluronic acid products (Orthovisc)

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a natural substance found in the body, particularly in the joints, eyes, and skin. It has a crucial role in maintaining joint lubrication, providing cushioning, and promoting healthy skin hydration. In medical and cosmetic contexts, hyaluronic acid is often used in various forms to address joint pain and improve skin appearance.

Orthovisc is administered through injections directly into the knee joint space. The hyaluronic acid in Orthovisc helps to lubricate the joint and provide cushioning, which can reduce pain and improve joint function in individuals with osteoarthritis. The injections are typically given by a healthcare provider and are part of a treatment plan tailored to the patient's specific condition.

Orthopaedic Surgery

Most patients suffering with pain do not require surgery and recover successfully when the appropipriate early interventions are initiated. However, if surgery is indicated the Expedium healthcare team will make the appropriate referral and provide you with public and private surgical options.

The Key to successful outcomes is access to specialist advice that can guide you to the most appropriate care pathway(s).
